Description

This ’29 Model A crew cab pickup is one of those things that makes you scratch your head and wonder, “Hey, why didn’t I think of that?” New 4-door pickups are big sellers today, and you don’t have to wonder why—they have a back seat for kids and secure, dry storage for stuff you don’t want to leave out in the bed. So why not build a hot Model A pickup with those same advantages? Wonder no longer, that question has finally been answered.

This truck was custom built from the ground up to showcase Custom Crewzers’ crew cab Model A pickup body and chassis, and has been their show and promotional vehicle for several years. It has been to shows all over the country, and was built using the finest components and craftsmanship—after all, if you were going to build a rolling billboard for your business, wouldn’t you make it perfect? This awesome blue truck stops traffic wherever it goes, and has been fully sorted and is ready to drive and enjoy today.

This is a 100% purpose-built vehicle with a 2x6 tube frame chassis specifically designed to support the 4-door body and bed. It has been over-engineered to allow for a wide variety of suspension and engine combinations, and the guys at Custom Crewzers actually want their Model A crew cab to work like a real truck. As such, there’s a trailer hitch out back and everything underneath is extremely heavy duty. Imagine using this truck to promote your business or tow your show car—it’s built to do it!

The engine is a bulletproof 300-horsepower 1997 GM 5.7 liter LT1 with aluminum heads, fresh out of a Corvette and fully rebuilt to stock specifications. Hedman supplied the exhaust headers which feed a 100% stainless steel exhaust system by Stainless Works that terminates in those awesome big-rig style exhaust stacks by Grand Rock. A Walker street rod radiator with an extra core handles the cooling chores, assisted by an electric fan. The engine is backed by a GM 4L60E 4-speed automatic, making one of the most reliable powertrain combinations in the world and giving you confidence that you can drive and work this truck without worries. Johns Industries supplied the custom aluminum driveshaft and 1330 U-joints, as well as the modified Ford 9-inch rear packing 3.89 gears on a Tru-Track limited slip differential.

The body has been completely designed and built by Custom Crewzers with a steel-reinforced cab. Nearly 100 CAD-designed and CNC laser cut pieces make up a safety cage around the passenger compartment, including the door frames. The roof and floor use steel cross bracing for rigidity, and the doors feature hidden hinges and bear claw latches. All door hardware is steel-to-steel, there’s no fiberglass in a structural role in this body, which should make it last virtually forever without cracking or splitting. The running boards, fenders, and bed floor have been core mat reinforced for long-term durability in these high-stress areas, and the floor of the cab features boat roving construction. The firewall is recessed and smoothed for a custom look underhood.

The suspension is traditional Model A hot rod equipment, with rigid axles front and rear. Up front, there’s a chrome TCI dropped axle riding on a Posies Super Slide spring that give the truck a low stance. A set of chrome shocks handle the damping chores, while a TCI Vega steering box manages the corners. Out back there’s a traditional 4-link holding up the stout 9-inch, with a set of coilover shocks from All American Coilover for load carrying comfort. For stopping power, there are 11-inch GM disc brakes up front, and a set of Wilwood discs out back with a Lokar emergency brake system. It rides on a traditional set of big-and-little Torq-Thrust wheels from American Racing, 14x7s up front and 15x10s out back, sporting BFGoodrich T/A radials.

This truck is filled with authentic Model A details, too. From the radiator shell and headlights, to the rear bumpers and taillights, all the bright pieces are authentic reproductions from Snyder’s Antique Auto Parts. The hood is a steel ’29 reproduction piece, also from Snyder’s. The paint is PPG Midnight Sapphire, and although this truck has 2835 miles on it, it still looks fresh. The bed is protected by spray-in bedliner with a textured black finish that helps hold cargo in place and doesn’t show scuffs and scratches—like we said, you can use this Model A like a real truck.

If you’ve ever ridden in a real Model A pickup, you know how tiny the passenger compartments really are. People must have been a lot smaller in 1929, because even an average-sized person today would find it cramped. That’s not the case with the spacious crew cab on this truck. Fitted with buckets from an ’87 Blazer and a custom rear bench, you can really stretch out behind the wheel for long drives. Covered in supple two-tone leather, the interior features all the high-end features you’d expect in a modern crew cab pickup: power windows, power locks (with remote door openers on all 4 doors), cruise control, and climate control with A/C provided by Vintage Air. The great-looking wooden dashboard is filled with VDO Cockpit Royale gauges surrounding a Flaming River tilt steering column and wheel.

Rodding is all about building something unique. There are about a million different ways to build a ’29 Model A rod, but if you really want to stand out in a crowd, this crew cab pickup is for you. It is probably also the most practical hot rod ever built, with room for a family of four and the ability to haul more than ass. Advertise your business on the side and you have a rolling billboard that will generate more attention than any ad or jingle ever could. Call us today and let us show you why four doors are better than two.
